Comments from Professional Readers
An unusual horror movie with plenty of twists and turns and a nice use of setting, MAROONED ON VOODOO ISLAND does a great job of containing the story to the island, and making the most of the geography at hand. Also noted was its originality and some unique horror situations.
Pitch Points
The story is reminiscent of the old haunted house movies of the 1940s. It's scary with comic relief, and it is character driven with friction between everyone. Staying true to the old movies, there is a last scene twist when the male and female leads, who had verbally spared throughout the story, find they really love each other.
Two versions of this screenplay have been written. One is a horror story. The other version is the same story, but the violence is not real as a movie star and his crew, hidden underground and behind walls, are actually shooting another "Blair Witch" type reality film, but the players do not know it. The horror is real to them. When the film crew is back in Hollywood they discover a nasty surprise by the island's very real ghost.
Both versions use only two exterior locations and all interior scenes can take place in a studio.
